As all we know, many high end speakers come with four sets of terminals on the back, two red, and two black with each pair of terminals supporting separate high and low frequency signals to the correct speakers(Click here for the picture). When supplied, the speakers will usually have a ‘bridging plate’ across them so that you only have to supply one cable to the speaker. If you supply each pair of terminals with a separate cable, from a separate amplifier output, you will be ensuring that each frequency gets a dedicated and consistent signal and this should improve the sound quality.

“A note on biwiring and biamplifying: many modern speaker designs have split crossovers within, and two sets of speaker terminals – that’s in a two-way speaker; more complex designs can have three, or even four, sets of terminals. In normal – that is single-wired – use, these terminals are linked, usually with metal jumper bars or cable links, but these connections can be removed to enable the sections of the crossover to operate entirely independently.

The idea is that by separating the bass and treble sections of the speaker completely, and driving each with its own amplifier channel (or biamplifying), there’s less interference between the bass and treble, and the demands of powerful bass notes won’t impinge on the ability of the amplifier to deliver delicate treble signals at the same time.

It’s all about greater purity of sound, and I have to admit that while I often feel the gains available when biwiring – i.e. just running two sets of connections from the same amplifier output – are relatively small, biamplification usually yields better focus, more openness and a tighter, cleaner bass.Vertical biamplification, by the way, means one stereo amplifier runs the bass and treble in a single speaker – one channel for each section –, while horizontal uses one stereo amp to drive the bass in the two speakers, and the other the treble. I must admit a personal preference for the latter, but it’s a close-run thing, and of course a set-up such as this provides ample opportunity for experimentation….

What’s most remarkable about the Trends Audio combination is that the sound it delivers manages to be both smooth and fluid, and at the same time open and dynamic. That means it has more than enough ‘slam’ and weight for large-scale orchestral music, while maintaining the delicacy and control required for, say, solo piano.”

Here are the steps to connect your speakers in the bi-amplification modes:
  • Make sure that your system is powered OFF.
  • Remove the bi-wire bridges from each speaker. This separates the low pass filter (LPF) & high pass filter(HPF) crossovers.
  • Connect each TA-10.2P amplifier channel to its respective speaker section as shown.
  • Set the level controls on the amplifiers such that the signal will arrive at all speaker terminals at the same power-volume level. As TA-10.2P amplifiers are identical, it is usually sufficient to set TA-10.2P amplifier level controls the same. The speaker's built-in crossover is designed to match the efficiency of all the individual drivers (i.e. tweeters, midranges, and woofers). When using the bi-amplifier connection you must directly deal with some of these issues by adjusting levels according to your listening preference.

Remark: If your amplifiers are not identical, use the more powerful amplifier for the low sections and the cleaner (better sounding) amplifier for the high sections.
